Inside NIBRT: Ireland’s 'flight simulator for biopharma manufacturing'
The Life Science sector has been of fundamental importance to Ireland for decades, contributing over half the country’s GDP, the Irish Industrial Development Agency (IDA) told Biopharma-Reporter.com as part of a visit to see a number of multinational biopharma companies who have invested in Ireland.
With an industry-wide shift to large molecules, Ireland has evolved as pipelines have evolved, and in 2003 the Government laid the foundation for The National Institute for Bioprocessing Research and Training, or NIBRT, with an investment of €60m ($82m) in order to train a workforce in upstream, downstream bioprocesses and bioanalysis.
Biopharma-Reporter.com took the opportunity to see how NIBRT since it opened in 2011 has contributed to the $2bn of biotech investment Ireland has seen of late, according to the IDA, and how industry has played its part in designing and using the Dublin-based facilities.
